Today I’m going to kick it back old school and journal instead of show you what I’ve been wearing. Is that cool? πŸ™‚

Yesterday I posted the following status on Facebook. I felt a tug on my heart to elaborate.

Growing up Courtney and I were inseparable. She was like a sister to me through so many awkward pre-teen days and I’m forever grateful to her for that. However life got in the way. We moved on from one another and lived separate lives. Until about a week ago. When I announced on here where I’ve been so many of you reached out and encouraged me. Courtney is among you. She private messaged me on Twitter and expressed her love and concern for me along with a lot of encouragement in Christ. She also told me she prayed our friendship might be restored. When I read that I got a little choked up. For years I’ve wondered how I could contact her without being awkward. I believe in a small way God is using my broken situation to restore other parts around me. It’s so.cool. to watch and witness. We had lunch the next week and caught up on everything that’s been happening in the last six years. We’re semi-adults now. πŸ˜‰

Let me explain what Super Summer is. Super Summer is the greatest thing for youth. Honestly. It’s a camp geared towards high school aged students with a heart for leadership. For our youth group this was our Youth Council. We met once a week and had a Bible study and encouraged each other. Our youth minister at the time, Chad, came to us with this Super Summer idea and we fell for it. I was terrified because of this new thing called “family groups.” This meant that no one I knew was going to be near me for most of the week. Strangers? I’m like, 17. I’m too awkward for this. But God made it all okay through these things called e-grams, which I’m totally going to bring back. Each student at the camp has their own mailbox. Anyone can write a short note to anyone they want encouraging them and loving on them. It was the best part of my day when I went to check my mail.

I never threw any away. (I’m sentimental like that.) Courtney texted me a picture of a pile of hers so I decided to pull mine out too and reminisce a little bit. Notes from old boyfriends, cousins, sisters, friends… All of them encouraged me in the place I am right now. Notes written five or six years ago are somehow still relevant to me now. Only God can do that. These notes told me I was beautiful, that I was being prayed for, that I was loved, that more notes were being written about me to be given to me later, silly drawings were included, gratitude for the friendship I’ve given others… I smiled at each one.

I remember being so vulnerable at that age. Walking around feeling self-conscious and not good enough. I didn’t know my true worth. I think that’s a crisis in girls, and boys for that matter, at that age. We’re searching for someone to show us worth. Someone to tell us we’re good enough and beautiful enough. We seek it everywhere. I sought it in friends, boyfriends, and in myself. Six years later I’m seeing my worth. Throughout this divorce and heartache I’ve prayed for God to show me my worth in Him. I prayed that He would show me how He sees me. I never knew all I had to do was ask. Nearly immediately after my praying that I began to see how He sees me. Beautiful, worthy, sought-after, precious, loved. These are the words that define me. Broken, shallow, pathetic, useless, worthless, ugly. These are the words I thought did.

“Brokenness is the bow from which God launches healing.” Louie Giglio said that at a Passion conference a couple of years ago and I’ve never been able to get it out of my head. The problem was I didn’t know what I needed to be healed from. I knew I was hurting and broken but I couldn’t put my finger on the ‘why.’ The past six months have shown me my ‘why.’ And here it is.

I never let go. I always put God in this small teenager-Melody box. The one that didn’t know Him fully. (And still doesn’t.) The one that took others pictures of Jesus to make her own. I relied heavily on others to tell me who God is. What His love feels like. It never worked. I was too lazy and scared to ask God myself and to let Him in. I thought I had it all together, and it did work for a little while. But years went by and I started to become unhappy. Self-doubt, worthlessness, self-conscious, self-esteem… all of these ruled my life. I never thought I’d come out of whatever hole I was living in.

I’m broken. Dirty. A sinner. But I am not defined by those things. Through this broken time and sorrow God is lifting me up into my true worth in Him.

Beautiful, worthy, sought-after, precious, loved. These are the words that define me.

Classy Pajamas

tee: Old Navy, pants: Dillard’s, sandals: Old Navy, necklaces: H&M, cuff: thrifted

Happy Friday! Just got word that my first class is cancelled so I’m about to hop back in bed and take a morning nap. πŸ™‚ These pants are literally the comfiest things I own. It’s like wearing pajamas all day. If you wear a bun and jewelry to sleep in. πŸ˜‰

Wore this last night to Shelby’s last choir concert! Waaaaaah! It was, of course, amazing. They’re always amazing.

But seriously. Get you some of these pants.

Byeee!

Learn It: The Washington Hair

Happy Thursday! A couple of you asked about my hair in this post so I thought I’d do a quick tutorial! I’ve dubbed it The Washington. Remember swimming in the summer and flipping your hair back like one of those powder wigs? πŸ˜›

Enjoy!

NEED:

-Hairspray
-Elastic circular headband

hairtutorial2

ONE: Start with straight or wavy hair.
TWO: Slip elastic headband over all hair and around your head.
THREE: Take a piece of hair from the front of your head.
FOUR: Wrap the hair once around the headband.
FIVE: Continue this all the way down the side.
SIX: Do steps 3-5 on the other side and you’re done!

Finish with some hairspray!

It’s a very easy style and bonus! If you start with wet hair it will curl your hair by the time it dries. Woo! Feel free to sleep on it. It’s not going anywhere. And if some of those hairs decide to pop out during the day (or night) just tuck them right back in place. Messy is in style and this covers well. πŸ˜‰

Have a good day!

Beauty Tuesday: Favorites

Starting last fall I started getting really into YouTube videos about makeup. Specifically Beauty Broadcast! (You will get lost in her videos. Watch at your own risk.) I first found her after discovering that my favorite cheap makeup brand, E.L.F., had a website. I Googled their best products and one of her videos popped right up. I’ve learned loads from her videos and really trust her opinion. I follow more beauty vloggers now and after using some of the products they recommend I’ve compiled a list of my favorites!

beauty faves

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation for Combo/Oily Skin: $10-13 I’ve tried one other liquid foundation in my life before this one and I hated it. I didn’t know what I was doing or how to put it on. Emily from Beauty Broadcast raves about this foundation. I tried it and I love it. It wears so well and stays all day! They have a great color selection and formulas for different skin types.

E.L.F. Kabuki Brush: $6 This little guy is so soft! I use it to blend together my blush and highlight so I don’t look like a clown. πŸ™‚

Wet N Wild Color Icon Shadow Trios: $3 Another Emily favorite I recently am trying. So far I really like these. They are very pigmented and last a decent amount of time. And, hey, they’re only $3!

Maybelline Baby Lips: $3 This has taken my Chapstick’s place. They are tinted lip balms and they smell so good! The darker ones give a little stain to the lips which I like. They are super moisturizing and make my lips softer when I wear them more days than not.

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen: $8 I was never a fan of liquid eyeliner, but I never knew why. I finally figured out it was the type of applicator I was buying. This is a pen! It’s extremely easy to use. Instead of holding a tiny stick with a glop of eyeliner on the end I just pop the cap off this guy and literally draw on my eyes. Love it.

What are some of your favorite beauty thaaangs? I’m all about some beauty. Let me know in the comments!

Stripey Monday

vscocam646vscocam642vscocam643vscocam647vscocam645vscocam641

shirt: Old Navy, jeans: Forever21, boots: Go Jane, watch: thrifted

Who knew a $6 shirt could make me feel so good! You should really hop over to Old Navy and pick it up. It’s oversized, soft, and stripes. My top three favorite things in a shirt. I own this in two other colors. πŸ™‚ But oh, these boots! I remember when Target came out with a pair like these with the thick zipper up the back, but I wasn’t willing to pay for them. Then these showed up on Go Jane! I love them, but the zipper is SO.HARD. to zip. I’ve tried soap, olive oil, baby oil… nothing! Any tricks?

What are your plans for this week? It’s Monday! Woo…?

PS. Thanks to my amaze sister for taking these. πŸ™‚

Come On, Texas

vscocam637vscocam636vscocam638vscocam639

sweater: thrifted, jeans: Old Navy, boots: thrifted

The weather here has been nuts. Earlier this week it was in the 80s. Today it’s in the 40s. Not that I’m hating it! I love the cold. But come on, Texas. Make a decision already!

I just really want to say again to all of you that I love you. Thank you for encouraging me and loving on me. God is good.

Happy Friday! What are your plans for the weekend? I’m going to see all of my friends in a musical they’re putting on. Then tomorrow it’s game night. πŸ™‚

Byeeeeeee!
