Thanksgiving: Part Four

Yes. Yes. We ventured out at midnight to Old Navy of all places for Black Friday. Call us crazy, it’s okay. We called ourselves far worse. We were actually pretty close to the door for getting there at 11. Soon after we got there, the line started backing up. Way up. When they started letting people in 20 at a time, everyone went straight for the $1 scarves and grabbed handfuls of them. Really? How many necks do you know?

The only reason I even wanted to go was for their 50% off outerwear and they didn’t even have the coat I wanted. However, I still managed to spend $60. Ha! You can read about my insane encounter with appalling grown women here.  I’m still angry…

New Dress and Sourpusses

dress: Old Navy, shoes: Target-sister’s, necklace: sister’s, cardy: JCrew-sister’s

Yes. I did it. I braved the INSANE crowds at Old Navy for Black Friday in hopes of getting my dream coat for 60% off. (They didn’t have it. Disappointed ensued.) Sisters and I stood in the cold for over an hour waiting for the doors to open. When they did open the doors we could see people scooping up things they didn’t even need only because they were $1. Running around like chickens with their heads cut off, they grabbed all that they could. It. Was. RIDICULOUS.

We only actually shopped for 45 minutes but because of the lines we weren’t out of there until 2.30. (AM!) My two sisters checked out and I was up next. The woman scanned all of my merch and then a coupon. Then it happened. The computer froze. No movement. No sign of it responding. I knew it wasn’t her fault! No one can help a technology issue. I reassured her when she apologized that everything was fine! And it really was!
However, this group of grown women didn’t have my patience. One of them walked up to my cashier, and said, “Um, are you going to move us to another line? Everyone is moving and we’re just standing here!” She kept insisting that the cashier do something about it though she and the manager were doing all they could with 100+ people in the store to help. A couple of minutes later when the manager was shutting down the register to reboot it, a woman from another line came to gripe him out for something she thought he should have done. Shortly after the same group of women starting demanding $5 off coupons for the trouble they were put through. THE NERVE!
The manager moved me to the register behind the one I was on to be rechecked out and that cashier sympathized with my intense frustration aimed at the grown women acting like children. I made sure to genuinely thank the people who did their best to amend the situation.

I had a really hard time not going back into the store and giving that group a piece of my mind. I was shaking I was so angry. On Thanksgiving? Demanding you deserve something because you think you were wronged? IN.SANE.

Needless to say, there was a great deal of humility and gratefulness that morning. Not to mention an eye-opening experience on how the world truly is. It’s ugly. But only because sin made it that way. Thank God he has saved us and loves us despite our hideousness.

So! Thank you Old Navy for putting on a great GobblePalooza and staying up all hours of the night to do your job even though some may be unappreciative.

Happy Thanksgiving, all.

PS. I got that ON dress on sale from $45 to $13! Thanks, GobblePalooza. 🙂

My Favorite Color

dress: Old Navy, shoes: Buffalo Exchange, necklace: f21, watch: found

I love this color but I rarely ever find it. Considering how well blues and greens go with red hair I don’t have a lot of navy or hunter green in my closet!

As you read this I’m probably singing/about to sing in my student recital. When I finish singing I can finally start work on my paper and presentation due next Tuesday, ha!

Is it really almost Thanksgiving?

Awkward and Awesome

So how’s your week so far? Since it’s almost over we should be rejoicing! There actually is a recital today so I’ll be going to that then working on homework pinning crap on Pinterest until my only class of the day. But tomorrow is Friday. 🙂

awkward:
-leaving dishes in the sink waiting to be washed.. like, they’re in the water and everything. we really need a dishwasher.
-I need a haircut. SO. BAD. I just can’t bring myself to actually make an appointment. Yeah. I’m insane.

awesome:
-spending some evenings learning guitar.
-watching Conan.
-my fingers getting numb from playing said guitar.
-school is almost over.
-school is almost over. I’d better start those papers.
-our anniversary is super close! like 11 days close.
-I’ve reached that point in the semester where everything slips my mind. I rarely remember anything and start to add things to my calendar that don’t even exist. I’ve gone insane.
-Mr. P’s personal oven pizzas. $.98, delicious. Better than Totino’s! Seriously.
-getting many a sweet comment on my facebook about my blog. 🙂

So forreal this time. Tell me something awkward.

Patriotism

Yesterday, the choir I’m in was invited to sing at a ribbon cutting for a new veteran’s home in Tyler. Senators, state representatives, judges, veterans, U.S. representatives, and commissioners were all there. (I rode the shuttle over to the site with David Simpson!) A representative of John Cornyn wrote a letter he wrote for this ceremony, Louie Gohmert was present, Jerry Patterson–the land commissioner who made all this happen–was there, the president of the UT Health Science Center attended, and the list goes on! It was so cool! There were several hundred people there most decorated in uniform and medals. This one veteran–we called him Indiana Jones because of his hat– sat near the choir and was red-faced and teary eyed throughout the ceremony. It was so sweet. I realized just how much I love America. It was patriotic without being cliche. I think a lot of times when I think “patriotic”, I think Star Spangled Banner, salutes, fabricated emotions and people getting upset for not being as patriotic as others.

However, this morning was totally new to me. I saw patriotism in a new way. The politicians were involved, sweet, down-to-earth and friendly. Something I’ve never seen up close and personal. Mr. Simpson was super nice on the shuttle. Humble and normal! The above named politicians each gave a short speech about the veterans, our country, and patriotism. I think we all teared up on more than one occasion.

I guess I just really wanted to share how much I truly see now how important veterans are. They shouldn’t be cast aside and thought of as those-crazy-old-men-who-wear-those-weird-hats-all-the-time. Or why-are-you-always-wearing-medals-it’s-2011. They fought for our country and to keep us safe. I think we owe a little something to them, don’t you?

So, without sounding desperately cliche, I’d like to say thanks to those men I saw today. The men who cry for their country, the men who are proud of that lump in their throat when they say the pledge of allegiance. Thank you to Corbet Taylor, my grandpa, for fighting and coming home safe so that I might have life! Thank you.

Comfort Zone

shirt: JCrew via my aunt, jeans: f21, shoes: Cole Haan via goodwill, watch: found, necklace: f21

Hey oh! Today was probably the most I’ve been out of my “comfort zone” in a while. When I’m in school, I set a routine for myself and I rarely waiver from it. I volunteered to drive a few people to this performance we were doing today. We got out about 30 minutes late and it was 15 minutes back to the school. We stopped at Taco Bell to get lunch since we didn’t have much time so I had to eat in the school instead of in my car (yeah, I’m lame) like I normally do. It was weird, I felt anxious the whole time, and will probably never do it again.
