My Wedding, Your Wedding: Part One

Hello!

As promised (a LOOOONG time ago), today I’m (finally) starting my series about planning a wedding and giving you specifics on how my wedding happened. (Get ready to read!) 🙂

Today I’ll be focusing on getting your plan together and what specifics you should put at the top of your priority list.

ONE:

MAKE A BUDGET! THE most crucial thing you could do to plan for a wedding. Make a specific budget down to who is paying for what. If your future in-laws are up for pitching in, see what they can contribute or if they’d like to pay for a specific thing. Here are some of the main things you should budget for:

-Venue
-Chairs and tables, if not included in your venue’s pricing
-Bride’s dress
-Groom’s clothing
-Catering, including cakes and drinks!

TWO:

FIND A VENUE! No matter what time of year you get married, wedding venues fill up fast. If you’re getting married somewhere a little more unique like an old abandoned warehouse or an open field, I don’t think you should worry about it too much. Just contact the current owners of that property and ask them if it’d be alright if you used that space on a specific day.

When I was looking for venues (ahem, before I was even engaged) I knew what I wanted.
-Somewhere outdoor
-Garden-y
-Vintage feel

I suggest you make a list of the specifics you want. Outdoor or indoor? Field or industrial? Do they have a plan B if weather doesn’t cooperate outdoors? Are chairs and tables for the reception included? What are their policies on catering? Are the owners helpful and nice? (SUPER important.) What’s the PRICE?

THREE:

Get a timeline/checklist together. Organization is crucial in planning something this big, unless you have a planner. How long do you have to plan your wedding? Ideally everything should be in order a few weeks or a month or two before the date. I had a little over a year to plan. Here’s a timeline I used: (there are a TON on the internet).

-For the first 6-8 months I gathered tons of bridal magazines and found some awesome blogs I read every single day. (oncewed.com, ruffledblog.com) I made a binder of a lot of inspiration. Pictures of dresses, cakes, decorations, groom’s attire, bridesmaids looks, invitations, hair ideas, ceremony decorations blah blah blah. TIP* The most important thing you can do when planning is to look outside the box. Don’t settle for what’s on the shelves at Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby. Explore Etsy, browse blogs! Keep your eyes peeled wherever you are for inspiration. Your wedding DOES NOT have to look like the next girl’s. I really can’t stress this enough!

-Next, my mom and I started focusing on invitations. (These should ideally be mailed out 6-10 weeks before your date. If you send out save-the-dates they should be out before then and invites should go out several weeks later.) We scoured the internet from the beginning and looked at hundreds of designs. Only after the stress of all of this did I realize that my mom was a fantastic artist! (DUH. UTILIZE YOUR FAMILY!) I then came to her with about 5 or 6 looks and she combined them all and came up with this:

Stop Dieting! Eat More!

That title has nothing to do with this post, it’s just this 6 Week Body Makeover infomercial is on and that’s was the first thing I saw when I looked to the TV for blog inspiration. See? I am original!

So, I had this post all written up and was going to post pictures with it, but they’re on my phone. And, well, my phone isn’t anywhere near me and neither is the cord to hook up to my computer… and there’s a kitten on my neck.

I knew there was a reason I hadn’t washed my makeup off yet.

Consider this one a freebie.

We Are Heroes

No. Seriously. Lemme ‘splain.

Thursday morning at 4:20, I woke to the sounds of crying. But not human crying, an animal crying. It was long enough and loud enough that it woke me out of a dead sleep. So I got up and looked out our window. My car sits behind our trampoline which is outside of our window. I saw what I thought were rabbits bound out from underneath my car. So I went to the window on the adjacent wall to scope it out. Two grown kittens with their mother. But they weren’t crying. They were just playing. I saw a mound on the slab of concrete next to our garage and dismissed it and kept going back and forth checking out the mother and her kittens. After about 10 minutes I realized that mound on the concrete was moving and crawling around! A tiny kitten screaming for its’ mother. The cat with the other kittens just ignored it and another cat came up and just sniffed it and left.

I was freaking out. I kept keeping Jason updated but he told me not to worry and that the mother would eventually come. But you see, it had rained the day before and it was chilly outside. After panicking for 30 minutes Jason finally convinced me to go back to sleep. The mound quit crying and moving. I was praying it would survive just a few more hours until daylight. When I would hear random cries I would thank the Lord it was still living. It took me a good bit to fall back to sleep, but as soon as my alarm went off at 6:30 I strained to hear cries.

Nothing.

I peeked out the window to see the white mound still. Wet.

No cries.

I was feeling so guilty. What if I would’ve brought it inside when I had the chance? Would it still be alive?

I convinced Jason, after much prodding, to get dressed and come with me to check on it. I grabbed an old towel and walked down the stairs outside. Those other kittens watched us from under my car. Jason went ahead of me to check if it was still alive. I stood, scared and guilty. Jason peered down at it and after about 30 seconds said, “Well, it’s still breathing.”

I could have cried. I was so happy! I ran over and bent down to check for myself. It looked awful. Soaking wet with ants crawling on it and dirt soiling its’ solid white fur. I touched its’ head and it let out a loud “MEOOOWW!” Oh thank you Jesus!! My throat swelled and I talked sweetly to it as I wrapped it in the towel and began to warm it up. I walked inside, ecstatic.

We went to our bathroom to try to clean it. Ants, fleas, dirt, sticker burrs, and mud covered this solid white kitten. But once I started researching, they said to not bathe it until it was warmed up because at this age they couldn’t shiver to control their temperature. We had cleaned it as much as we could. It was filthy.

I tried to make some milk but we had nothing to feed it from. So as I got ready to leave, Jason sat with the kitten wrapped in a towel on the edge of the bathtub. I kissed him goodbye and thought of that baby all day.

On my way home I stopped by Wal-Mart and bought kitten formula and a bottle. When I got home, she was all dry and beautiful. I picked her up and brought her to the kitchen with me to fix a bottle. I set her on the counter. When I accidentally spilled some she freaked and stuck her nose in the small puddle. As soon as I fixed the bottle I tried to feed her. It took some time but now she’s a pro.

Right now she’s sleeping in her makeshift bed: a laundry hamper with some fleece blankets. I love feeding her. When she gets hungry she crawls up my chest to my neck and tries to suck on it. I know it’s silly, but I feel like a mother! She has to be fed every two hours and coddled. It’s good practice for us, I guess.

I had an awesome weekend!
Friday night was spent with my bff, Randa, at her fancy lingerie (did I say that?) party. SO much fun. Haven’t seen her since graduation several weeks ago! Enchiladas, cupcakes, and tons of laughs. I had such a good time. It’s just what I needed from being cooped up in this house! She’s getting married this Friday and I CAN’T wait! 🙂

Saturday Jason and I had to take Little Bit, aka the rescue kitten, to the vet. We’d noticed some bald spots appearing in random places on her skin and finally made an appointment to see the vet. As soon as he saw them he said, “Yep. She’s got ring-worms, and you can get them, too.” Ugh. So now I’m paranoid every time I itch. But, he did give us drops for her and shampoo to get rid of them. She also had hookworms! My poor baby. He gave her medicine for them and said we’d need to come back in three weeks to make sure they were going away. Now, she’s quietly sleeping in the sun. I love that girl.

After we took her to the vet we decided to explore our town a bit. We drove through downtown, though most shops were closed, and through the surrounding neighborhoods. They. Are. Gorgeous. For funsies later I looked up houses for sale. 🙂

Saturday night I went with my sisters to see Kung Fu Panda 2. A+ for that movie! So adorable. I ended up spending the night and eating my weight in homemade chocolate turtles.

I hope you’re having an awesome memorial day! We’ll be spending it painting the house and finishing up drywall so we can finally have a party out here!

Gasoline

A few days ago I was getting gas. It clicked so I went to pump it an extra time or two just for good measure. When I pumped the first time gas overflowed and the wind blew it all over my pretty dress.

The end.
