Pepper Is Now A Toddler

Tuesday was my puppy’s second birthday! I can’t believe she’s already two. She’s the greatest dog ever and is our favorite gal pal. She hated having this hat on though, so we had to hold it on her head. But watching her try and take it off was even cuter.

We celebrated by laying on the concrete out back and throwing her favorite green frisbee around and feeding her table scraps.

Happy Birthday, Pepper! Here’s to a million more. 🙂

Getting To Know You: Brittney

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I first met Brittney during my second year at UT Tyler, the fall of 2012. She was in the band and friends with one of my very good friends, Randa. I had seen her and knew who she was for a while but we never had an opportunity to talk or hang out. But that changed during my second semester that year. Our schedules aligned and Brittney, Randa and my best friend Kait and I took our hour break on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and got bagels for breakfast. We all rode together and talked about goofy stuff, sang Christina Aguilera and owned the streets of Tyler. Brittney and I, even though we didn’t know each other, hit it off immediately. You know those people you meet and you just fall into step of an old friendship? That’s how meeting Brittney was. We had never spoken but it was easy to just talk to her and be myself around her. That’s not an easy thing to do for me. Brittney is just easy. Over the next five months we hung out, talked and learned about each other.

From the beginning I could tell that Brittney is a fierce friend. Over and over I saw her drop everything and drive hours to be with a friend that needed her. She’s loyal and protective and motherly. She takes care of her friends physically and emotionally. She is loving and gentle but mama-bear when she needs to be. Everyone who knows her loves her and lots of us consider her like a college mother to us. And she owns that role proudly.

Brittney plays the French horn and is a music major at UT Tyler. A few years ago she decided to major in education and even sold her horn, but by a providential sequence of events she found her way back to music and wants to teach elementary kids music. I’m selfishly glad because if she hadn’t returned to music we’d have never met. 🙂

Perhaps the best quality about Brittney for a single friend is her excellent wing-woman skills. Many a time she’s told me what to say or been cool for me when I’m not. She’s bold and brave and I admire those strong qualities in her because they so greatly contrast mine. Like during our dinner, for example, she left her number for our waiter because, “all he can do is say no.”

But underneath all that boldness and bravery and motherly instinct, there’s a softer side of Brittney. Her two cats, Jynx and Jypsy, are her real children. The cats make her a gentle giant, in a way. When I walked into her apartment they both greeted us with collars around their necks. Jypsy, the calico girl above, jumped up and climbed all over me in the chair while Jynx, a solid black boy, played it cool and slunk around the room. Brittney’s studio apartment is just as cute as she is. In the heart of the Azalea district she lives in a renovated garage studio apartment with open windows and a cozy bed. I wasn’t tired but when I walked in I just wanted to snuggle up in bed and sleep in front of the windows. That’s Brittney to me. She can make me feel comfortable in any situation and make me feel like home. And that’s a quality you’re born with.

I love you, Brittney, and I can’t wait to see where our friendship goes!

Getting To Know You: An Introduction

Processed with VSCOcam with x2 preset

A couple of months ago standing in the shower, as you do, I had an idea. Course I hoped I remembered it by the time I got out to write it down because I have the memory of a newborn. But the general idea was this: I want to get to know my friends better and document our friendships where we are right now. I’m calling it Getting To Know You.

I’ve met some new people this year and developed older friendships as well but I realized I don’t know the things that make my friends who they are. I met all of them in college so the high school and awkward middle school years are vacant from my memory. And I realize spending a few hours with each friend is just a small drop into who they are but I’ll learn things I didn’t know. And that’s the whole point. Community.

More recently I read Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller and had a realization about just how selfish I am. Our nature as humans is self-centered and I’m only just realizing how bad it is. I don’t ask people how they’re doing, I wait for them to ask me. I don’t introduce myself, I wait for them to introduce themselves to me. It’s bad, y’all.
So I want to rid myself of that, and in an effort to be less selfish I want to invest in other people. I want to purposefully hang out with each of my friends and get to know them more, old and new. I’m excited to sit down and take pictures of each of them (oh yeah, I’m going to take pictures of them) and introduce them to you. It will be such a fun way to document our friendships this year.

I’ll be posting a new friend every Wednesday! I can’t wait for you to read it. 🙂 I lovely love love love these people. They’ve had such a cool impact on my life and they’ve helped me grow so much this year. They’ve encouraged me and put up with more than their fair share of crazy. (Thanks, guys.) I can’t wait to dig into these people that I love.

#ETXmeet

Did you guys know that there are people on Instagram that like, really love Instagram? I mean they love it so much that they meet people and form these groups and meet up and just take pictures for a few hours together.

Neither did I. And honestly the very thought of it paralyzes me with anxiety. But recently I started following more people on Instagram that really inspire me to take more pictures every day and stretch my creativity beyond outfit pictures a few times a week. One of these people posted about an InstaMeet earlier last week and after wrestling with the idea for a couple of days I convinced my introverted sister to go with me.
This was actually the very first Instagram official East Texas meet! How cool is that? Instagram sent Shawn (@srt4shawn), the one hosting the meet along with a couple other ‘Grammers, an entire InstaMeet kit complete with bug spray, apparently.

We met at Bridge281 Coffee in Longview (SO.DELICIOUS. and WHY had I not heard of it before?) and had coffee, met each other, and then spent an hour or so out back taking gorgeous pictures in the fields.

When the light was all gorgeous and beautiful we hiked back to the coffee shop and carpooled to an abandoned part of downtown.

Oh yeah. Did you know it’s illegal for you to even step on the railroad tracks? Some very tough police officers stopped us and told us that. #hardcore

It was so much fun getting out and experiencing something new. What a fun thing that people created.

Spring

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

In Texas, we don’t really have spring. It goes basically fall to summer with four random snow and ice days in March and April, if we’re lucky. Despite all that, “spring” just breathes new life into everything and everyone. For me, I feel like a completely brand new person. I know I haven’t shared much of what God’s been doing with me in great length, so I feel it’s time to share with you. My hope and prayer is that someone will be encouraged, and I feel that with the urgency I feel to share it that someone will be. So. Here goes.

2013 was rough. Scratch that. It was my hell on earth. There were days I didn’t want to wake up or move or breathe or think. Depression hit me deep. I was lost and in the darkest place physically, spiritually and mentally I’ve ever been in. I couldn’t sleep. I didn’t eat. I felt like a shell. An empty one at that. I moved in with my parents in January of last year. (I’ll save that story for another time. :P) Suffice it to say there were many changes within that tiny month of January. “A new start” doesn’t even begin to describe the beginning of my year.

For the first months of that year I spent my days in constant prayer and most of my commutes home were spent in tears crying out to God asking Him what to do. Desperate and utterly and completely helpless I fell flat on my face repeatedly screaming for Him to show me something. To show me who I am in Him and how He saw me. At the beginning of March last year something shifted. I remember being in bed one night and hearing God tell me to ask Him out loud to take over and take the burden away. I’ve always had such trouble verbalizing my feelings so God asking me to do this made it that much more significant. When I asked Him out loud to take the weight I felt so light I immediately fell asleep. Jesus took that weight of shame and depression completely off of me and gave me peace. For the first time in my life I felt the peace of Jesus and knew who the Prince of Peace is. The months that followed were still hard and sad and emotionally scarring. But I had peace. Peace that God knew what He was doing and peace that I finally knew my worth in Him. I am beautiful. I am His.

When 2014 rolled in I was blissfully happy. I was still settling in to my new self, but by the end of February I was as content as I ever remember being. Peaceful. As we head into summer I just feel grateful and worshipful all day every day for what God did in my life. I’ve been through the season of rebirth and now I’m in the season of gratitude and witnessing. I am ready.

If you are lost and in darkness and don’t know your worth in Jesus, I beg you to fall on your face and ask Him to show you. He will not hesitate. Be encouraged that Jesus sees you right where you are. Ask Him. You are loved. You are seen. You are not alone.

We Took Our Gal Pal to the Park

Over spring break, we got a little antsy sitting around at home even though it was so.nice. Pepper loved having everyone home so we decided to take her to the park. She had an absolute blast and so did we! The scenery was just gorgeous.

After a few hours at the park and snapping my camera crazy, we drove through Sonic to grab some big ol’ drinks and treat Pepper to a grilled cheese. Which, by the way, she loved. She was so exhausted when we got back she crashed for the rest of the night. She is such a great dog. I wish I had more time to do things like this with her and lived a little closer to some parks. Hey! Another reason to move to Dallas! 🙂

What parks do you like to go to? This one is Synergy park in Kilgore, TX. I know Tyler has some really beautiful ones and I’d love to go and check those out too one day. Saturday fun? Yes!
